Grading Procedures
Consistent with the English Department grading statement, a student’s term grade will be the average of tests, papers, presentations, quizzes, homework, class work and participation. Each term there will be a minimum of four major grades, at least two will be papers. The remaining two may take the form of tests, additional writing assignments, projects or presentations.
- Major grades constitute 70% (65% if you are in 2SP) of your term grade.
- Quizzes and graded homework constitute 20% of your term grade.
- Class participation, which includes coming to class on time, carefully and thoughtfully completing homework, listening attentively to classmates and myself, regularly contributing to classroom discussions, participating in group work with enthusiasm and focus, constitutes 10% (15% if you are in 2SP) of your term grade.
- Please type all papers and written assignments. Handwritten papers will be returned and considered late. See me if you know you will be unable to type a paper. *Note: journals are the exception to this rule – they may be hand written!
- Papers must be double spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font with a one inch margin and include the MLA heading. Papers that do not comply with these requirements will be returned and considered late.
- Late graded assignments will be marked down 5% each day the assignment is late.
- Late graded assignments are not accepted after two weeks.
- Students are responsible for making up all work due to a missed class. The work is due the day after you return. Tests and quizzes must be made up within one week of your return.
- Students must have a composition notebook, a binder with pockets and a pen or pencil. Students are also required to bring the work we are studying to class each day.
- I am available to give extra help periods 1, 5 and 8, or you may make an appointment to meet with me after school.
- Check the course website. Updated each week, it reflects current homework assignments and announcements.
